A girl in a sailor's dress jumps rope. She's pretty, she's free, she's having fun. She is the logo of Sunnyside Records. The friend of founder Francois Zalacain, Chris Coffey, discovered it 21 years ago on a rubber stamp in a shop in Greenwich Village. "It says everything we want to say. The music is about jumping, dancing. And my wife liked it."
Sunnyside was founded in 1982 by Francois Zalacain after a career at IBM. Sunnyside is a relaxed, independent label with no binding contracts, no specific mission and an acceptance of every style of jazz. It releases the music that Zalacain likes, from a flirtatious boleros disc by Spanish singer Martirio to an eloquent disc by pianist Laurent Coq. The label also licences albums from European labels that would otherwise not be available in the United States.
