Titled “Corsara”, this is the sixth album by Neapolitan singer-songwriter Flo and her first to be sung entirely in Neapolitan. Its ten tracks paint a portrait of an unconventional Naples—exploring aspects often unseen or unknown—while also reflecting an artist who continues to chart her own course, steering clear of established routes.
“Corsara” is a free, sincere, and deeply human work that restores the song to its full complexity and craftsmanship, bridging the gap between the mainstream and what usually lingers on the margins. The album speaks—primarily, though not exclusively—of "corsair" figures: those who carry the scent of the sea, sail without masters, chart their own paths, and defend only what they love.
This imagery serves as the key to a record that defies categorization, remaining true to the artist’s independent spirit and her ability to traverse diverse genres without losing her identity. Flo (aka Floriana Cangiano)—one of the most original voices on the contemporary scene—effortlessly navigates different musical territories, moving fluidly between song and theater.
Through a refined and independent songwriting style, she has forged a path free from labels or rigid affiliations, blending musical exploration and Mediterranean roots with a strong narrative focus. It is within this spirit of freedom that *Corsara* comes to life—an album performed from start to finish by real people playing real instruments and singing with real voices.
It is a work crafted with the meticulous care of someone who weighs every word, seeking a balance in every track between irony, vitality, and a gentle melancholy. Among the locales of this “peripheral” Naples depicted by Flo, we encounter “submerged” figures—such as Giulia Civita Franceschi and her “Caracciolo” floating nursery school, Austino ’o Pazzo performing acrobatics on his Gilera, and the young writer Santo Cassese, who died in the war at just forty.
Alongside these historical figures, Flo weaves in passages exploring family roots, desire, fragility, and the need to be gentle with oneself. The writing moves against the current—shunning oversimplification and trends—and remains true to an inner rhythm that finds beauty in small things and the complexity of emotions.
