      Description hide

Anton Mangold, born in 1991 in Schweinfurt, Germany, is an artistically dazzling young musician. After beginning with harp at the age of eight, he transferred to the Würzburg University of Music as a young student while still at school. During his time there, he also studied jazz saxophone at the universities in Würzburg and Cologne. This dual artistic talent can be heard in live performances, hearing him interpret both a Scarlatti sonata and jazz guitarist Pat Metheny. This diverse musical background led to the project Two and a Harp Man.

Anton Mangold, guitarist Yuxiang Zhang and drummer Umberto Odone met in Würzburg, Germany, worked intensively together on various projects and then composed the pieces for the present trio lineup. The recordings were actually taken in just two hours. The result and quality of the session surprised the musicians themselves and convinced them to push this project forward intensively. The harp is not a common jazz instrument. One of the first musicians to introduce the concert harp into jazz was the German Jonny Teupen. Dorothy Ashby and later Alice Coltrane, among others, continued the path musically. However, the music of Anton Mangold's Two and a Harp Man differs significantly from their projects. Anton impressively proves that the harp in jazz is more than just an exotic sound. With virtuosity and the art of improvisation, he creates a very special atmosphere in his concerts, combining the electric guitar and that of his harp in such a way that the sonic worlds of both instruments come together. And where is the bass in this amazing trio? He is absent - and no one misses him.

Anton Mangold received the Cultural Promotion Prize of the City of Schweinfurt and the Young German Jazz Prize with the Anton Mangold Quartet in Osnabrück in 2017, the 2nd Band Prize and the Soloist Prize at the Young Munich Jazz Prize in 2021, the first prize at the Steinway Solo Piano Competition in Frankfurt/ Main in 2025 and the German Jazz Prize in 2024 as a member of the Shuteen Erdenebatar Quartet.
