      Description hide

Felmay Record is glad to announce the release of Taramandal, a new album by flautist VIRGINIA NICOLI accompanied by three outstanding Indian percussionists: Sukhad Munde (Pakhawaj), Subhajit Brahmachari and Debajyoti Sanyal (Tabla).

From the snowy peaks of the Alps to the cicada-filled Greek summer nights, VIRGINIA NICOLI channels the universal awe of stargazing into profound melodies and improvisations.

Featuring tracks inspired by constellations such as Pleiades, Andromeda, Cassiopeia, and Orion, the album bridges tradition and innovation. While grounded in Indian Ragas like Bhimpalasi and Asavari That, some tracks venture into uncharted scales, creating harmony that transcends boundaries.

Virginia’s Bansuri playing is marked by a rare and unique vocal style, achieved through many years of dedicated Dhrupad studies on this instrument. Her playing combines the fluidity of the bamboo flute with the deeply meditative and resonant qualities of the ancient Dhrupad vocal tradition, creating a melodious sound unique of its kind.

This is VIRGINIA NICOLI’s second album, following her debut, a one hour performance, dedicated to a single traditional Raga, showcasing the depth and meditative beauty of Dhrupad. In Taramandal, she blends tradition with innovation, exploring new melodies and rhythms not commonly found in Dhrupad, creating a rich and expansive musical experience.

This groundbreaking project draws its inspiration from the infinite vastness of the night sky, transforming celestial wonders into mesmerizing soundscapes rooted in Indian Classical music.

Each composition on Taramandal (costellation) is a musical constellation, weaving together the timeless hum of the Tanpura with the sound of the Indian bamboo flute, the Bansuri and north Indian percussions such as Tabla and Pakhawaj.

The booklet presents the reproductions of four celestial artworks created by Martina Stuflesser, Lovisa Burfitt, Satabdi Hati, and Linda Jasmin Mayer.each one accompanying each composition.
