Breaking the mould, adding a dash of electronic and visionary sounds into the tradition of Salento folk music. Telling historical tales of fights, conflicts, land, passions and delirious dances and conjugating them in a present tense (but also looking beyond the future). Thus creating a vibrant and quivering connection between ancient roots and modern technology.

This is ‘Psychedelic Trance Tarantella’, the new Kalàscima’s album, where passion and restless research and experimentation are perfectly summed up by the image on the CD cover. A digital drum plugged straight into an amplifier that brings out, mixes and distorts tradition. “Betrayal”: this is what Kalàscima are committing with their album, taking the most traditional Salento folk music out of the stereotypical revivals of work songs and farmyard dances, miles away from a dull and aseptic postcard; and, on the contrary,  giving the energy of its past and of its traditions back to this unique land.

In these tunes, everything is overlapped, crossed, split and put back together. Everything is nothing but tradition, obviously, as coming from Salento. However, tradition is completely ‘revamped and renewed’ with modern technology, thus turning into a fragment of a wider “pop subject”. This operation actually enhances, without altering at all, the nature and the essence of the music, and mix ‘Joy and Revolution’, to mention Area (band). The eleven tracks are a collection of frames and images of real stories, like the revolt of Arneo’s farmers, or describe women in “altered state of consciousness”, told as contemporary tales, even urban.

In this way, Kalàscima’s music turns into a sort of “urban new-folk”, where old memories of a rural culture and a peasant world, overwhelmed by values of modern society, duet with sounds and noises of our daily life. “Psychedelic Trance Tarantella” is the Salento folk music of the future.

Definitely, this is not another version of classic Pizzica, so popular and trendy in Salento Summer nights.

The common thread between many different messages and meanings from many different sources. On a daily base, we are seduced by many different suggestions and temptations. Kalàscima ideated and created a collection of songs as a soundtrack of our need for psychedelia. The reality is watched through the distorting prism of psychedelic trance.

From Australia to Latin America, from Northern Europe to the Middle East: Kalàscima’s sound travels all around the world, meeting international World Music artists from different Countries and starting interesting collaborations with many of them. An example is the singer Bukhu from Mongolia, come to know during a festival in Australia and invited to contribute with his extraordinary virtuoso vocals in a recent live tour. Sometimes, these collaborations were born ‘at home’, like the one with Ludovico Einaudi. The famous pianist and composer invited Kalàscima’s founder, Riccardo Laganà, in his ensemble. This unity led to Ludovico’s participation in “Psychedelic Trance Tarantella”, playing the piano session in the track “Due mari” (Two seas).

“Psychedelic Trance Tarantella” marks also the starting point of the collaboration with Ponderosa,   publishing the album, and Alberto Fabris as Producer.

“Psychedelic Trance Tarantella” pens a new avenue to the World Music scene, the rhythm is always passionate and engaging, the drum beat is highly hypnotic, and the world turns into an endless dance floor. An extension of the farmyard, where a country hoedown turns into a ‘global’ party.

From Salento, world music by Kalàscima.
