Pete Seeger was on the focus of the first release on the Roots Collection, a CD series devoted to historic recordings launched by DiscMedi. Now it’s time to take a deep look into the impressive work of another all-time folk legend: Woody Guthrie.

Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie is one of the most important and influential figures of folk music. A troubadour which guitar was a machine to kill fascists and his songs the voice of those in poverty, those leaving their home to get a living wherever it was possible and those always seeing good things happens to others.

An activist, a fighter for the rights of working class, a syndicalism hero, the most brilliant chronicler of the Great Depression time and an awake social and political conscience but also a gifted bluesman, a folklorist and an icon of roots music that penned songs later covered by the likes of Bob Dylan, The Byrds, Joan Baez, Bruce Springsteen and Wilco, among many others. This Land Is Your Land, also the title of one of his anthemic songs, is an in-deep view on his early discography. It includes some solo work but not only the work of the singer committed with the social problems of his time. There’s also the solo work of the loving father playing stirring songs to his child.

And even some solo work by the lover man going into emotional country and blues tinged balladry. There’s time too for Woody Guthrie’s work as a member of famous Almanac Singers, the band where he first meet Pete Seeger. But probably, one of the most interesting things about This Land Is YourLand is the fact it includes all songs originally released in 1940 on a serie of recordings titled The Dust Bowl Ballads, which even today are still considered a cult piece and important part of Woody’s most enduring and memorable music.

Miquel Jurado, one of Spain’s most respected music critics, has selected the songs included in This Land Is Your Land and wrote the extensive liner notes you’ll find translated into English and French in a deluxe booklet.
