35 years after her CD debut, Kirsten Bråten Berg finds it's about time she released a compilation album. The double CD release consists of a collection of her musical collaborations so far in her career.
As a young girl Kirsten sang songs by Joan Baez, Geirr Tveitt and others from the wave of folk singers in the 60's. She danced and sang at the local traditonal leikarring, where she heard the old folk songs for the first time. In the 70's she came in contact with Club 7 in Oslo, a cultural club of various genres like theatre, folk, poetry and jazz with members like Agnes Buen Garnås, Maria Høgetveit Berg and Dagne Groven Myhre in the lead. From then there was no way back.
Writings from the heart
Kirsten is known as one of Norway's most talented songwriters in folk music, and is known to really hit that exact soft spot of the heart with her words. She's always felt her lyrics has been the most important part of her performance as a folk singer. Her performance style is called å kvede, and is an old Norwegian way of singing that stands very close to storytelling. This makes it important to tell stories from your own heart. She feels the fiddle has had a great influence on her development, and has worked with fiddlers like Gunnar Stubseid and Hallvard T. Bjørgum from Slinkombas, and has in recent years worked with Annbjørg Lien a lot.
Music that reaches out and pulls you in
When on stage, the natural force and strength of Kirsten's voice makes the kind of atmosphere you simply cannot resist dancing to. As she pulls them in and reach deep within, she is a singer who has fulfilled several audiences yearning to feel the music in their own hearts.
