The playing of multi-instrumentalist Gebhard Ullmann is full of power and radicalism. Shuttling
between New York and Berlin for many years, he continues to represent the forefront of the German jazz
scene at the forefront with exciting ventures.
In the current project Hemisphere 4. Kapitel 2, the continuation of Ullmann's continuing project
Hemisphere 4 (JHM 303), he once again builds on the jazz tradition by exploring realms of new music and
free improvisation expressively and with exciting conceptions.
Ullmann's lasting impact as an improvising musician has always been the result of the fact that he -
more than many of his colleagues - works as a composer of chamber music works including two string
quartets and several compositions for solo wind instruments. In addition he has composed several larger
works for classical orchestra, most recently his first symphony entitled “Symphonic Interweavings for
Orchestra, Voice, Piano and Percussion“. In 2020 Ullmann released his 60th recording as bandleader/coleader;
in 2024 his 60-minute piano cycle "Impromptus und Interationen" was also published.
From the very beginning, Ullmann's plan was to release a second part of Hemisphere 4; this contains
considerably more compositional elements than the previous suite. The work is always played
completely live, without cuts and overdubs, and is also reproduced in exactly the same way by the
ensemble live. In comparison to its predecessor, Gebhard Ullmann describes the character structures of
Chapter Two as "very quiet audio films", with a large part of the improvisational sections taking place in
duo with Liz Kosack.
Gebhard Ullmann has worked with Paul Bley, Han Bennink, Herb Robertson, Keith Tippett, Andrew
Cyrille, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Willem Breuker and Michael Riessler, among others. For his
work he received the Julius Hemphill Composition Award, the German Phono Academy Prize, the SWF
Jazz Prize and in 2022 the German Jazz Prize in the woodwind category.
