      Description hide

Marco Mezquida is about to introduce his new project, Tornado. He has teamed up with two old and beloved associates, with whom he has shared a good deal of music and hours on the road: Masa Kamaguchi on double bass, and Ramon Prats on drums.

Marco has named his album inspired by his perception of the type of energy that the three musicians, (individually, and as a sonic unity) exude throughout their freshly created repertoire, either if they are choosing a smooth and delicate approach, or during one of the trio's eruptive and creative outbursts.

Tornado, Marco Mezquida's new project -with Masa Kamaguchi (double bass) and Ramon Prats (drums)- will be available after an overwhelming pre-premiere at Mercat de Música Viva de Vic, that generated a cascade of accollades. It will be premiered in Madrid on October 19th and 20th, and in Barcelona on December 20th.

In the meanwhile, Mezquida is closing a very intense summer, which included brilliant performances at major stages, like North Sea Jazz Festival, Jazzopen Stuttgart, Schubertíada, Torroella de Montgrí, the Big Night of Marco Mezquida at Kulturarena Jena, among others. Before he heads to his tour in Japan, Marco will be performing at Bozar in Brussels and at Lantaren Venster in Rotterdam. Later on, he will have a beautiful date with living legend Michel Camilo, a concert as a duet, by invitation of Festival de Jazz de Barcelona.

      BIOGRAPHY

Marco Mezquida (Maó, 1987) is one of the most brilliant and promising appearances on the European music scene and an artist destined to conquer any imaginable stage in the world. He received both BMW Welt Jazz Awards in Münich (audience’s and jury’s) and the Jazz Album of the year award by Enderrock in 2022, he has received the prestigious Premi Ciutat de Barcelona and has been elected Musician of the Year 4 times by the Association of Jazz and Modern Musicians of Catalonia; He has presented his solo piano concert at the impressive Palau de la Música, a privilege reserved for seasoned pianists, and has been summoned by an endless list of first-rate artists to record albums and concerts all over the world. Brilliant as a composer, pianist, improviser, bandleader, eclectic and versatile: Jarrett, Schubert, Ravel, Gesualdo or Bley, to name a few, blend exquisitely into Marco's musical DNA, whose vertiginous concert activity has led him to perform in some of the important stages in 32 countries around the world on 4 continents (Tokyo Jazz Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Kölner Philharmonie, Jazzopen Stuttgart, Wiener Konzerthaus, Salle Pleyel, Palau de la Música, ElbPhilharmonie, Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid, Jazzaldia, Vitoria Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Auditorium Parco della Música, Blue Note Tokyo, among many others).

Marco recorded more than 50 albums: 16 as leader and co-leader of his groups recording his own music and 36 as sideman or collaborator on various projects. His projects vary from piano solo to his sypmphonic projects (his piano concerto, Talaiot, or his original approaches to Rhapsody in Blue and Porgy & Bess) as leader/co-leader include his acclaimed trio with flamenco guitarist Chicuelo, his evocative trio with Aleix Tobias and Martín Meléndez (three albums recorded: Letter to Milos, Talismán and Ravel's Dreams -revisiting the music of the great French composer-), the acclaimed duo with the great singer Silvia Pérez Cruz, his blind date with the dancer Sol Picó, his Danish trio Pieris (Mezquida-Bodilsen-Andersen), and his praised solo piano concerts (a format with which he has led him to be called a “piano magician” and to have his own cult voice in the world scene) his duets with Portuguese songwriter Salvador Sobral, and with Spanish singer and trumpet player Andrea Motis.
