      Description hide

Being a woman in Guatemala is an act of resistance. Being a Mayan Kaqchikel woman and an artist is, in itself, a political statement, but also a radical gesture towards life, and it would be the best way to present SARA CURRUCHICH.

SARA CURRUCHICH is the first Guatemalan indigenous singer-songwriter to present her songs internationally in kaqchikel, her native language, and in Spanish. She was awarded as a Breakout Artist by the Dante Alighieri Foundation in 2015, and again, in the same category, at the Estela Awards in 2017. She is an ambassador for the HeForShe movement of UN Women. Also a cultural manager, teaches music workshops in different communities in Guatemala and has a strong commitment to the historical memory of indigenous peoples. She has not only travelled countless corners and places in her country, but also on the American continent and in Europe. Her voice and her message of love, conscience, respect, and defence for life in all its forms have made her a bearer of light and hope for many women and men.

SOMOS is a sound fabric of songs sown and spun to bring light to the fight for the rights of indigenous women, peoples, their land and the diversity of the world, with messages to eradicate racism, violence and injustice. SOMOS is made up of thirteen songs inspired by the people, the word, the resistance, the joy, the hope, the Mayan worldview and the act of walking together. SOMOS is a cry of love, resistance and tenderness.

It was recorded and produced in Guatemala, France and Spain, with the collaboration of Amparo Sánchez (Amparanoia) and the artistic direction and musical production of Gambeat (bassist of the group La Ventura Manu Chao). A work that dialogues with different genres such as rock, folk and traditional Mayan kaqchikel music.

SARA CURRUCHICH first appeared in March 2020 at the Zócalo in Mexico City, during the Women’s Time Festival, in which the singer-songwriters Ana Tijoux and Mon Laferte also participated, within the framework of the International Women’s Day. The Guatemalan singer gave a second concert on Aztec soil at the Foro del Tejedor, a popular musical stage located in Colonia Roma.

On June 12 Mamita Records will release in physical format SOMOS, the recording debut of SARA CURRUCHICH.
