For more than 15 years the internationally celebrated JBBG - Jazz Bigband Graz has been making a name for itself with its ingenious and very own sound, which is somewhere between jazz, pop, minimal, world music elements and jazz music attitude. Driven by the musical vision of Kalnein and Schaffer, the JBBG has broken into absolutely new musical territory for jazz orchestras with their last three productions.
Now the two of them present a new project that gives JBBG a new facet: JBBG Smål - GRAN RISERVA, JBBG in pocket size, so to speak. The band combines expressive and colourful melodies with enough space for musical surprises and a large improvisational arc. For this production the exceptional French-Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê and Austria's icon on alto saxophone and flute Wolfgang Puschnig were invited as special guests.

JBBG Smål - GRAN RISERVA in conversation with Virginia Guillén (VG):

VG: Horst-Michael, „JBBG in pocket size“. What does that mean?

Horst-Michael Schaffer (HMS): Well, JBBG Smål is an extract of the (large) JBBG Bigband – Jazz Bigband Graz. Next to my long-time musical partner Heinrich von Kalnein and myself it comprises of keyboard virtuoso Uli Rennert and the new JBBG rhythm section players, bassist Thomas Wilding and drummer Thomas Stabler. We got together to develop new music in the more intimate setting of a quintet. From the very beginning we started inviting international guests, where we had the chance to experiment and develop music, which might even make it into the large ensemble.

VG: How did you experience working together in the studio?

Uli Rennert (UR): According to what I felt we played almost as being together on a stage. The recording session was very relaxed, yet focused and I believe that the listener will be able to hear how spontaneous things were at times. For me this kind of being in the moment is, by the way one of the qualities of this band. Tom Stabler (TS): In fact we had performed quite a bit as a quintet and therefore we are pretty tight. For the recording session we invited two guests, which for me was like adding two additional colours. And it’s like a picture, which gets it’s quality by a well-balanced blend of colours and elements.

VG: How was the cooperation with your guests?

UR: Working with Nguyên is a special treat, especially because both of us are working in the same field. We both are able to add sound paintings and textures with the means of electronic effects and it was pure joy exchanging ideas, talking about effect pedals, but also find the right individual space within the music for both of us. Wolfi Puschnig is sort of an icon of the Austrian jazz scene. It is always a pleasure working with him and he is always able to add a fresh touch to the music.

VG: What does the title „Times of Change“ mean for you?

TS: The title of the album captures the soundtrack of our times better than anything else. For the moment nobody knows how the future will look like and when we will be able playing live again. The compositions of three of our band members cover a broad spectrum. I believe the title of the album is just perfectly chosen. HMS: „Times of Change“ is a title, which, of course fits like a glove into our turbulent times. But in fact the title came up before the pandemia. You might wonder, if the Jazz bIgband Graz doesn’t have clairvoyant skills. (smiles)

VG: Will there also be a Volume 2?

HvK: This production we recorded in Stafano Amerio’s ARTESUONO Studio in Cavallico close to the Italian city of Udine. Stefano is one of the best European sound engineers I know of! According to my experience a real good studio gives you the luxury of getting a great sound the moment you walk in, put your headphones on and play the first note. This exactly is the situation in Stefano’s place. After two days we walked out having enough material for actually two productions. If everything works out, we can look forward to Volume 2 next year. VG: Thank you all for the interview!
