On her first studio album in five years, singer/songwriter Vonda Shepard creates a modern-day soul gem with From the Sun. Due in stores on September 16th, the album basks in Shepard’s warm and intoxicating vocals, reflecting Entertainment Weekly’s proclamation that “The singer/songwriter genre doesn’t get any better than this.” The Hollywood Reporter marveled, “her soul-baring confessionals are tempered by flashes of wit and whimsy along with a hook or two and often bittersweet underpinnings.” Produced by Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Randy Newman, Bonnie Raitt), From The Sun features guitarist James Ralston (Tina Turner, The Del Fuegos), bassist Jim Hanson (Johnny Cash, Rodney Crowell, Bruce Springsteen), and drummer Matt Chamberlain (David Bowie, Tori Amos, John Mayer), as well as mixer/engineer David Boucher (Daniel Powter, Indigo Girls, Andrew Bird).

In a Hollywood moment that was years in the making, Vonda caught the ear of television producer David E. Kelley one night during a performance, who became such a fan that he placed her in his hit television show, Ally McBeal. A rare opportunity for a singer/songwriter, Vonda won a pair of Emmy Awards for her smoldering musical performances as the resident chanteuse at the lead character’s favorite watering hole. An added bonus was the partnership that the show had with music. One of the first television shows to make music an important part of the storyline, Vonda became a household name overnight, selling 12 million albums along the way. She also picked up two Golden Globes, two Screen Actors´ Guild awards, and a Billboard award for selling the most TV soundtrack records in history.

Shepard began her career by playing Los Angeles-area clubs when only 14, touring with Rickie Lee Jones and Al Jarreau in her early 20s and landing in the Top 10 with the single “Can’t We Try” when only 25. She has released six studio albums, a live album, concert DVD and four soundtracks for Ally McBeal. In addition to her performances on the show, Shepard was music producer and has continued to work with Ally creator David E. Kelley on his other productions. Most recently, Shepard released Live: A Retrospective in 2004. The concert CD/DVD set included live performances and interviews with Jackson Browne, the Indigo Girls, Al Jarreau and others.
