"Trophies" is the 5th record from indie veterans, Luxury, who formed in the 1990's in a small southern town, (Toccoa, Georgia, home of Paul Anderson, "The World's Strongest Man" and James Brown "The Godfather of Soul"), but found their inspiration elsewhere. From the outset, Luxury were brash and swaggering with an ever-present flamboyance from singer/ frontman, Lee Bozeman. Like Fugazi fronted by Morrissey, they became known for their live shows, which always felt close to imploding
under their own frantic energy. As the years progressed and events changed them (e.g. a catastrophic touring wreck
which led to broken necks, an almost crippled Bozeman, and a sobering and wide-eyed regard for life) they have focused their
energies intensely on reflecting upon life as it is lived. While on the first Luxury record ("Amazing and Thank You"), Bozeman
asked, "So, what do you expect from life?", on "Trophies" he begins to answer that very question, albeit retrospectively:
1987, the clothes we wear, a tomboy, books we've read but don't remember reading, funny unbelievers, an apartment with cheap rent, our own place in
the "war on women," the matrices on the inner grooves of Smiths records, and the priesthood.
On "Trophies," these are the elements of a life. While Luxury has always occupied the border between aggressive and miasmic,
"Trophies" is, perhaps, the fullest expression of those principles at work in their music. Throughout 2014-5, “Trophies”
was recorded and mixed by Matt Goldman at Glow In the Dark Studios in Atlanta. From the heavy swagger of "Parallel
Love," to the underwater, almost shoe-gaze of the title track, it is all of a piece and is as alive as any of their recorded output.
Between the recording of Health & Sport (2005) and Trophies Lee Bozeman, Jamey Bozeman, and Chris Foley became Eastern
Orthodox priests. The members of Luxury currently live in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas.
Coincidentally, during the making of the record, guitarist Matt Hinton began documenting the recording, their first album
with three priests in the band, which become a part of his new feature documentary, “Parallel Love: The Story of a Band
Called Luxury.” Upon completion of “Trophies,” Matt recommended that Luxury delay the release the album until the documentary
was complete. The rest of the band said “How long will it take?” Matt said “about 7 months”. Three years later, the
film is finally complete and has won a couple of awards and has secured a theatrical distribution deal with Abramorama
(“Anvil!”, “Exit Through the Giftshop”, “Eight Days a Week”, etc) with a planned release in May of 2019 with “Trophies”
following in June. Luxury has begun writing songs for a follow-up record.
