‘Broken Cycle’ is the first album by this dynamic trio. After performing together for the first time in early 2013, saxophonist Angelika Niescier, guitarist Hilmar Jensson, and drummer Scott McLemore decided to head right for a Reykjavik studio and, in one day, put together Broken Cycle, an incredible album of minimalist modern jazz displaying the energy of a process of collaboration and true spirit of connectivity.
Scott McLemore, an American based in Iceland, met Angelika at Moers Jazz Festival and knew they had to play together. He called upon Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson and set things in motion. The album was released at the Reykjavik Jazz Festival in August 2015.
Hilmar Jensson is known for his work with AlasNoAxis, Arve Henriksen and more, Scott McLemore is known for his work with Sunna Gunnlaugs Trio and Angelika Niescier is a well known figure in German Jazz.
With the help of the Goethe Institute in 2013 the trio performed at Iceland’s two most valued concert halls, Harpa in Reykjavik and Hof in Akureyri and recorded their first album "Broken Cycle” containing 8 original pieces which range from introspective ballads to odd-meter audible Escher sketches. There is a sense of exploration on the recording, as the musicians were getting to know each other and the material. There is a playfulness as they push the boundaries of each other’s compositions, filled with free improvisation and angular melodic gems.
