In creating the Chaussettes Noires, Eddy Mitchell founded the first French rock ’n’ roll group. français. As a debonaire figure fronting a bunch of rascals with astounding energy, Eddy showed how much his idol Gene Vincent had influenced him, not to mention American rock. The group flashed into the charts to become the pillars of Sixties rock in France. Here Olivier Julien looks back on the beginnings of Eddy Mitchell, the singer-writer-actor who started as an icon for young people before he became a symbol of France’s cultural landscape.
